Continental isn’t necessarily the least expensive way to fly. I checked some dates in May, 2009 with a return in July, 2009 and Continental was twice the price of other airlines. Their schedules weren’t any better either. You have to change planes twice whether you take Continental or another airline.
You don’t want to buy separate tickets between Houston and Tokyo and Tokyo to Saigon. That’s almost guaranteed to be very expensive.
A quick search of airfares showed United as the least expensive airline on the route. I used a May 5 departure and a July 14 return. United was $1,458. Continental was $3,222. Your actual fare may vary depending on your travel dates and when you buy your tickets.
You can search for airfares by checking any number of travel websites. Enter your dates of travel and Houston to Saigon as your origin and destination. Kayak.com is a good place to start because it shops many other websites and combines the results in one display. If you’re inexperienced at planning trips, then you should probably use a travel agent. An agent will do all of the research for you and will advise you on entry documentation requirements.

Cheap flights are not easy come by. When I went to VN 5 years ago from the US, a combination of Asian carriers were the cheapest option. Flying OUT of Ha Noi back to the US, the cheapest carrier varied – most often non-US carriers, but sometimes the US carriers were cheapest. You just have to start early and buy well in advance.
Good luck!

Save yourself a lot of time and aggravation and contact a Vietnamese owned travel agent in Houston. Tell them you want the cheapest fare available as well as an :international” departure. I have made the trip from BOS to SGN dozens of times. I currently fly United BOS, CHI, HGK, SGN. I take two bags weighing 35Kg each as well as a carry on and laptop. Total cost, $1150 rt including my visa.
You generally have to present your frequent flyer card at the airline kiosk when you check in to receive credit for the miles you travel.
Hope this helps.
